The Trouble with Dora

When my nephew was younger, he loved Dora and wore her backpack with pride. It didnt matter to him one wit that Dora was a girl. And yet, fourteen years after the shows debut, Dora has been sold out, a victim of merchandising. The above photo was snapped in my doctors waiting room. Sexism is so insidious that it took me a while to realize what was wrong with the decals stuck to the wall. But look closely. The toons body language says it all. Dora stands with her arms folded, legs crossed, while Diego is running full speed. The message is clear: Girls = Passive; Boys = Active. (I wont even go into the butterflies surrounding Dora versus the menacing paw prints near Diego.)
Not to be hasty, I checked to see if there are more active wall decals of Dora on Amazon. Not really. Theres one showing her holding a bunch of flowers and another, the best of the bunch, in which shes on tippy toes, arms wide open.
Now imagine a preschool boy seeing the two figures on the wall. Would he choose Dora as his model? Not likely. A preschool girl would, though. And with her choice comes the implicit message that boys do all the running.
Dora the Explorer and Go, Diego, Go generally get high marks from the media for setting nonstereotypical examples for its young viewers. Unfortunately, its licensing department has a long way to go.
Okay, todays rant is over.

Help with learning the skeleton
They also have found it useful to learn the naming system for bone markings first, before trying to even find the specific markings on the skeleton. This method for understanding the conceptual framework before you begin learning a list of structures is more fully explained in my Survival Guide For Anatomy And Physiology: Tips, Techniques And Shortcuts
In the Survival Guide, I explain how learning bone markings is like learning geography. Before you can find specific calderas on a map, you have to know what a caldera is. Should you be looking for a stream? A mountain? A valley? Once you know a caldera is a volcanic mountain that has collapsed for form a big crater, its easy to find any caldera assigned to you on a map. You wont waste your time and effort looking at every feature . . . just the big craters. And knowing what a caldera is, youll remember what it looks like as you learn the name.
Thus, if you learn that a condyle is a rounded bump where a bone articulates (joins) with another bone, its easy to find and remember all the condyles in the skeleton. If you know that a foramen is hole, then finding them (and remembering them) is now that much easier.
When we compare learning anatomy to learning geography, we are using an analogy. Such analogies are comparisons that help us learn.
Something my students have found to be really, really helpful in finding good analogies for learning the bone markings is the Visual Analogy Guide
Created by my friend Paul Krieger at Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC), the Visual Analogy Guides
Using his considerable skills as an illustrator and his great talent as a teacher, Paul has put together some great tools that help students focus their study time by using visual and kinesthetic processes to help them learn "the hard parts" of A&P.

Woman with HORN
A Chinese grandmother(Granny Zhao, 95, of Zhanjiang city, Guangdong province) has a five inch "horn" growing out of her forehead. The horn curves downward and looks like the stalk of a pumpkin. In fact, this horn is actually not a bone that grew out from her skull, instead its a mole with elongated skin making it looking a horn.
“At first, it was only a mole, but it gradually grew and became like a horn,” she said," the horn dont cause me any trouble and discomfot except to affect my vision slightly and block part of my view." Her family are hoping that medical experts can explain the phenomenon.
